There is only one week until the first day of school and the Ridley campus is buzzing with faculty and staff preparing for the upcoming school year. Parents and students are coming to campus to pick up their uniforms and books and final preparations are being made in the houses and on campus to ensure everything is ready for when the students return!
Ridley College has a new Housemaster for Gooderham East! Ms. Cousins moved into her new G-East digs a few weeks ago and is settling in well. I decided to ask the new Housemaster a few questions about her new position:
#1. How long have you worked at Ridley?
I have been at Ridley for 10 years. I started in the I.T. Helpdesk, then moved to the Communications Department, and now I am really enjoying the Admissions Department. I was a duty member in Leonard House then I became the Assistant Housemaster 3 years ago.
#2. What are you looking forward to as a new Housemaster?
I am looking forward to maintaining the G-East traditions, but also starting some new ones. I’m excited to get to know the girls and be a part of thier continued growth and development as successful, happy and healthy young women.
#3. What do you like to do for fun?
For fun, I like working out and enjoy group yoga classes.
#4. What are you looking forward to in the upcoming year?
I enjoy watching the student plays and sports, so I am looking forward to that!
#5. You have a dog, tell me about him.
Sammy is my 2-year-old Boston Bulldog. He loves everyone, and likes to be the center of attention!!
Mr. Martinez was on vacation in Alberta this week and ran into Old Ridleian Olivia Groff! Mr. Martinez wrote an email to me and said, “what are the chances that you would bump into an OR on a glacier!?” Groff graduated in 2010 and she ran into her former teacher on the Athabaska Glacier at Jasper National park. It’s proof that the Ridley family really is everywhere!
Mr. Martinez is a Science and Spanish teacher, coach and is also Assistant Housemaster of Arthur Bishop East.
Send us your pictures or tell us stories of you doing interesting things or if you have run into someone from the Ridley Family recently. Email: email@example.com and we will share your story on the blog!
Don’t panic, the organ is just having a good cleaning after 28 years. Dodington and Dodington from Alymer Ontario is on campus taking the organ apart, cleaning and fixing anything that needs attention and re-installing the bits and pieces. They should be done by the end of the week. They will be focusing their attention next week on the “Echo Pipes” that have not worked for quite some time. These are located over the entrance as you walk in to the main chapel. The organ dates back to 1926.
About a week ago, Ridley College was transformed into a movie set with trailers, lighting and cameras all over campus. It was all for the filming of ‘Dead Before Dawn’ – a fast paced adventure comedy that follows a bunch of college kids as they accidentally unleash an evil curse that causes people to kill themselves and turn into Zombie Demons, AKA ZEMONS!!! It’s Canada’s first 3D Feature Film. The film is funded by TELEFILM Canada (The Federal Government Feature Film Program). Emmy winner Christopher Lloyd recently joined the cast that includes Devon Bostick and Martha MacIsaac.
Devon Bostick plays Casper Galloway – you might recognize him from ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ (check out Ridley in the background):
Filming took place in 2CB, the Library, outside of the Iggulden gym and the quad area by Merritt and AB houses.
The film is directed by April Mullen and was written by Tim Doiron and is co-produced by the duo. ‘Dead Before Dawn’ is due out next year. For more information about the film check out their website: http://deadbeforedawnthemovie.com
