Family Guild hosts successful weekend of events

The Ridley College Family Guild is dedicated to truly creating a sense of community amongst our families. Led by current President, Laura Menechella, our generous Family Guild is continuously looking for ways to raise funds in an effort to provide the legacy of a Ridley education to deserving students. Since 1999, the Family Guild has raised more than $1.3 million dollars, which it has funneled back into Ridley scholarships and bursaries, as well as our Annual Fund projects on campus.

On Parents’ Weekend, February 19th and 20th, our Family Guild hosted several events to celebrate our unique school community and to continue its long history of giving.

Family Guild Trivia Night

Parents, faculty, staff and friends of Ridley packed Williams Hall for a charitable (and very spirited) Trivia Night. Following dinner, competitors battled for eight rounds of questioning– spanning topics like geography, sports, Ridley history, and pop-culture. By the end of the night, more than $3,200 was raised to send children from the local community to our Ridley Summer Programmes. Thank you to our MC John Romano, Trish Loat and our sponsors: Chartwells, Oast House Brewers, Silversmith Brewery, St. Catharines Courtyard Marriott.

“As Family Guild President, I was overwhelmed by the generosity and support shown by many Ridley College families.” – Laura Menechella

Ridley Family Ski Day at HoliMont

On a warm and sunny Sunday, our families had the opportunity to test out the slopes at HoliMont Ski Club in Ellicottville, NY. The annual Family Ski Day was made possible by the Family Guild (special thanks to Laura Menechella, Aimee and Charles Cook) and Valerie Parke. It was a great day of skiing with a fabulous lunch provided by the Guild and the BBQ expertise of the Cooks!

Students hit the slopes for Ski Day 2016!

On January 22nd, Ridleians travelled to Barrie, Ontario and Glenwood, New York to hit the slopes! It was a spectacular day to be outside; warm, sunny and a thick blanket of snow covered the ground. Students eagerly suited up in their winter gear and prepared for a day of fun!

A long-standing tradition at Ridley and one of the most anticipated student trips of the year, Ski Day offered more than just skiing.  Students, staff and faculty had the opportunity to try an array of winter sports! Students who traveled south to Kissing Bridge had the opportunity to ski, snowboard and even tube! Students who made their way north to Horseshoe Resort enjoyed downhill and cross-country skiing! At the bottom of the hill awaited a warm chalet for any student looking to escape the cold and enjoy a hot meal! Since winter sports are such a quintessential part of Canadian life, Ski Day is also offered a chance for our international students to be exposed to a true Canadian experience! What a great way to experience Canadian culture, first-hand!

Fresh air, the great outdoors, exercise and friends; there was no better way to spend a day away from the classroom. Students learned new skills, strengthened bonds with their peers and forgot about their homework for a few hours! According to the David Suzuki Foundation and the Children & Nature Network, time outside can help with problem solving, focus and creativity; so a day in the snow wasn’t all fun and games!

Back on campus, our primary students were having some fun of their own! Playing in the snow, practicing their soccer skills, skating and enjoying time with their friends – there were no shortage of smiles.

This past weekend, students enjoyed every last drop of summer and ushered in the new school year with a trip to camp.  Upper School boys headed up to the scenic Onondaga Camp while the Upper School girls and lower school students from grade 7 and 8 enjoyed beautiful Camp White Pine. While there, students had a chance to bond with their peers and fellow housemates, getting a chance to showcase their talents, partake in new sports and activities and of course, have fun!

The boys had an adventurous weekend; full of zip lining through the woods, water skiing on a blue lake and playing a friendly game of water polo.

The girls filled their days canoeing and by building house spirit. In completing a high-flying adventure on a ropes course, our students surely showed they had grit.

At Camp White Pine the grade 7’s and 8’s participated in team building activities such as a ropes course, beach volleyball and all kinds of fun in the sun!

Our younger students didn’t miss out on the fun, as they had their own camp day on campus. Students made their own stop motion animations, played trivia games and bonded with their tribes!

Parlez Vous Francais?

The air was crisp and spirits were high in St-Donat, Quebec for the Grade 7 Immersion adventure with Perspectives. The Perspectives program integrates language skills and culture with outdoor activities, music, arts and crafts and dramatic arts to create a unique French educational experience.
Students enjoyed three days of skiing, downhill and cross-country, recorded Quebecois folk songs, learned about Quebec’s history, and participated in many group activities with schools from all over Ontario.

One highlight of the trip was the talent show, in which several Ridley students participated. Thanks to Mme Bradley for organizing the trip and to our students who fully participated in the program and represented Ridley well!
