Last night the finalists from the Grade 9 Civics classes presented their YPI: Youth Philanthropy Initiative projects. This is the second year that Ridley has participated in YPI. The Youth Philanthropy Initiative is a grant-based program where students research local, grassroots, social service organizations and compete for $5000.00 by creating presentations that aim to convince judges why their organization should receive the grant. Earlier in the term the students formed their groups, picked a local charity to research, interviewed the people who work for the organization and the people who benefit from the organization and then they made presentations to their individual class. Six groups in total were chosen as the finalists to present last night in front of parents, faculty, classmates and a representative from YPI. The groups used powerpoint, videos and persuasive speeches to encourage the judges to pick their charity. This year, the group representing The Child Advocacy Centre of Niagara was chosen to receive the $5000.00 grant. The Child Advocacy Centre is a safe place for children and youth to speak to a trained professional about allegations of abuse. All of the presentations were well thought out and conveyed the passion that the students had developed for the organization they represented. Congratulations to the finalists representing Red Roof Retreat, The RAFT, McNally House Hospice, Heart Niagara, Adolescent Support Services of Niagara and to the winning group made up of Yunlin Ji, Fiona Adams, Annie Hinan, Tamara Butera representing Child Advocacy Centre Niagara. Watch the video below to get an idea of what the presentations were like:

Cadets are a longstanding tradition at Ridley College and on Saturday we held our 105th annual Cadet Inspection. The activity teaches leadership, discipline and teamwork to the students. Cadets are the only collective activity that the whole Upper School and a portion of the Lower School participate in and the students work very hard to prepare for this special day. It is quite an accomplishment to see it all come together on Inspection day and the students should be proud of the effort they put in.

The Inspecting Officer was Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Tim Hogarth of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Regiment with Mr. George C. Hendrie ’74, Chairman of the Board.

The Ridley College AP Studio Art Class opened their exhibition last night in the Matthews Library. Each student selected three works from their portfolio to display in the exhibit. In the AP studio art class students must complete twenty-four works of art throughout the course. Twelve works are described as “General” and cover a range of media, techniques and composition. The other twelve pieces are described as “Concentration” works and are made in response to a specific theme. The works that are on display in the library come from the students’ Concentration component. In order to create their “Concentration” works the students had to go through the difficult process of finding a direction for their work and establishing a voice.

Today the Physical Geography class took a field trip to Short Hills Park to undertake fieldwork studies to test the assumptions learned in the rivers unit of their course. Groups brainstormed hypotheses in the previous classes, and considered ways to test them. Short Hills Provincial Park was a good location, since it has an accessible meandering stream, shallow enough in parts to wade in, and with plenty of variety to the stream channel.

Some students collected water samples to study sediment load at different parts of a meandering stream. Others measured the speed of the stream by timing floating corks, others the depth, width, etc. They will compile their observations in a detailed report, and consider other hypotheses that one might study.

The weather was ideal and contributed to a successful field trip. When IB is fully implemented at Ridley, the Internal Assessment in Geography will be Field Work. This gave us a good opportunity to have a dry run (pardon the pun) and refine the process for upcoming years.

As told by Geography teacher, Mr. Park

RIDLEY COLLEGE is pleased to announce that it has been authorized as an International Baccalaureate World School, Diploma Programme commencing September 2012. This announcement follows a rigorous accreditation process and means that all students in Grades 11 and 12 will have the opportunity to complete the prestigious IB diploma.

In September 2012 Ridley will offer courses enabling students to earn both the International Baccalaureate Diploma and the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The IB diploma is a two-year course of study that begins in Grade 11 and ends with a series of final examinations at the end of Grade 12. Widely recognized as one of the world’s best preparatory programmes, universities across the globe offer advanced standing to successful IB graduates. Most universities in Canada will grant first year equivalency credits for three of the six courses students undertake for the IB diploma. Over 40 students from Ridley’s current Grade 10 class have enrolled in the IB Diploma Programme.

“The International Baccalaureate (IB) is the fastest growing school curriculum and exam system in the world. It is a truly international pre-university diploma. The addition of the IB enhances Ridley College’s opportunities in promoting rigour, resourcefulness and respect. It sets the tone for young people to become effective, successful and honourable global citizens. It will enable Ridleians to fulfill the global reach of being a world prep school.”

Just inside the Marriott Gates, in a cluster of trees to the west, is a large nest of branches – home to Ridley’s latest couple – a pair of Sharp-shinned Hawks.

The hawk is the smallest of its kind in North America. Their diet consists almost exclusively of medium-sized birds, and Chris Clark of the grounds department has noticed a decline in the Robin population at that end of the campus.

Given their recent behaviour there is very likely either eggs or recently hatched offspring in the nest. These birds are great to watch especially during through the family rearing process. We are lucky to have the hawks on campus as they are notoriously skiddish. Please do not approach the tree, but observe from the road – we would like the birds to continue to call Ridley home.
